Where do you struggle the most when making a monthly budget?

I've tried several times to create a monthly budget, but somehow I lose track halfway through. At first, everything looks fine, but then unexpected expenses pop up-especially food and online shopping. For those of you who successfully stick to your budgets, how do you control overspending? Do you use a specific app, or is a simple Excel sheet enough?

I struggled with the same thing too. I'd plan a budget but then food orders and online shopping would mess it up. What helped me was setting aside a small "fun money" amount each month so I can spend without guilt. I just use a simple Excel sheet and check it weekly. It's not about fancy apps, it's more about keeping an eye on it often.

Same here, I start off with good intentions and then a week in I'm like, "Where did all my money go?"
It's never the big purchases for me, it's the little sneaky ones, a snack here, a "just one more coffee" run, or ordering food instead of cooking.
Lately I've been carrying just cash for those impulse things (so I see the money leaving my hand), and also tracking "fun money" as a separate line item, gives me permission to spend a little but keeps it in check.
What about you, do you usually lose track with food, entertainment, or something totally random?

Honestly, I struggled with the same thing for a while. What helped me was breaking the budget into weekly chunks instead of just monthly-it feels less overwhelming and easier to track. I use a free app (YNAB was too much for me, so I just went with something like Mint/Spendee) to auto-track spending, but I still keep a simple Google Sheet to check where I stand at the end of each week.

Fort he "unexpected" stuff like food or online shopping, I started making a small category in my budget called "fun/misc." That way, I don't feel guilty spending there-it's already planned for. Once that category runs out, I stop spending until the next cycle.

If you don't want an app, even writing down expenses in your phone notes right after you spend helps a lot. The act of logging it makes you more aware.

Would you like me to share a really simple Excel template I use that doesn't feel overwhelming?

For tracking small business expenses, Expensify and Zoho Expense are great for scanning receipts and automating entries, QuickBooks offers full accounting integration, Easy Expense keeps things simple and straightforward, and Rippling Spend is useful for team approvals. The best choice really depends on whether you prioritize simplicity, integrations, or scalability.

I used to try Excel sheets, but I'd always forget to update them, and then random food or online orders would throw everything off. What really helped me was switching to an app like YNAB or Goodbudget. They make it easy to see exactly where your money is going in real time, and the notifications kind of keep you accountable without feeling too strict. It's still a work in progress, but having it all in one place definitley keeps me from overspending as much.
