There are so many myths floating around about credit scores - like the idea that you need to carry a balance to build credit. What's a common misconception you've heard, and what's the real story behind it?

That "carry a balance to build credit" one is super common-and totally false. You actually build credit by using your card regularly and paying it off in full and on time, not by keeping a balance. Another one I've heard is that checking your own credit score hurts it, but that only applies to hard inquiries from lenders, not soft checks. There's so much confusion out there-it's wild how many of these myths still stick around. What's one you've heard that people still believe?

The biggest one I've heard is that you need to carry a balance to build credit, which is totally false. You don't have to pay interest to show good credit behavior-just using your card regularly and paying it off in full each month is enough. Carrying a balance actually hurts you over time because of the interest charges. Have you come across any other myths that people still seem to believe?

Exactly! Those myths are everywhere. One I still hear a lot is that closing old credit cards will improve your score* In reality, it can actually hurt your credit because it lowers your overall available credit and shortens your average account age. People also assume carrying a balance helps their score, like you mentioned - it's amazing how persistent that misconception is.

One of the biggest myths I still hear all the time is that checking your own credit score will hurt it - which isn't true at all. Soft inquiries, like when you check your own report through apps or credit monitoring services, have zero impact. It's only hard inquiries, like when you apply for a loan or credit card, that can cause a small dip. Another common one is thinking you need to carry a balance to build credit - when in reality, paying in full each month is actually better for your score and your wallet. What about you, have you come across any credit myths that people still believe?

a common myth i've come across is that checking your own credit score will lower it. the truth is, soft inquiries, like checking your own score, don't affect your credit at all. only hard inquiries. when a lender reviews your credit for a loan or credit card application-can temporarily ding your score. so it's actulaly smart to check your credit regularly to stay on top of things without worrying about hurting it.

Big one: you do NOT need to carry a balance to build credit. That's a myth. Paying your card off every month actually helps your score and saves you interest. The real drivers are on-time payments, low utilization, and having credit open over time. Using credit responsibly > paying banks extra for no reason.
