What's one budgeting mistake you kept repeating before it finally clicked?

For me, I used to focus too much on the big expenses and completely ignore the small daily spending. Those little purchases didn't seem like much at the time, but they added up faster than I expected.

Curious what budgeting habit or mistake took you the longest to fix.

Not sure you call it a mistake, but home repairs are one section of the budget that cannot be determined. You just have to have extra money and hope it is not used for that. Just 5 minutes ago I went to use the vacuum, we have a central vacuum unit in the basement, and 3 hookups downstairs and 2 upstairs for the hose, and it will not work this morning. I have no idea why so now we have to call the central vacuum company for a service call. I can see that costing anywhere between $149 to $299. Not in the budget, or over budget for predicted 2026 expenses for home repairs. Usually 1-3 things like this come up during the year though. We just hope it is hundreds not thousands in cost. We lived here since the house was brand new, 61 years, so we know the house. My mom is 88 and I am 60 now. Our budget is so tight.
